I’m getting hungry looking at this photo...
Pros:
Fried darker
Skins present
Thicker cut
Ridiculous portions
Cons:
Get soggy in the bag
Get soggy in the bag
Get soggy in the bag
Smell better than they taste (I don’t necessarily agree with that, but it’s been stated.)
Ridiculous portions
Possible Improvements:
Crinkle cut
Keep your mayonnaise away from my French fries, dammit!
Larger portions
Looking at the list of Pros, you can see the sort of anti-list of why I think In-n-Out has terrible fries.
I’ve been to St. Anthony...

in n out fries are really, truly bad. i miss 5 guys.
![]() 02/23/2018 at 13:31 |

They remind me of those shoestring potatoes that come in a can. Awful fries.
And the Basic Burger at Five Guys is quite good as well. They’re pricey, but it’s a solid.

Forget the fries and eat more peanuts.
![]() 02/23/2018 at 13:36 |

Nope. Eat many of both.

This is good oppo.
I mean, I’m off fries entirely for a bit, but your post is bringing back joyful memories. Bless you.

How do you like Penn Station’s fries?
Your fry comparisons are spot on. In ‘n’ Out’s everything was a disappointment.
![]() 02/23/2018 at 13:47 |

Same here, or rather, off potatoes and corn. No fries, no chips, no potato-based vodka, etc.
![]() 02/23/2018 at 13:53 |

I love Culver’s fries. Crinkle cut, fried in peanut oil and crispy every time.
![]() 02/23/2018 at 13:59 |
|
Lol! The portions, though!
![]() 02/23/2018 at 14:15 |

I’m one of those charlatans who prefer my fries soggy. The “con” list should also include the prices at 5 Guys.
In-N-Out has tiny, insignificant fries that have no flavor.

Never heard of Penn Station other than the actual Penn Station.
![]() 02/23/2018 at 14:18 |

Never heard of Culver’s.
If I ever see one, rest assured that I will stop immediately and order some fries in size ludicrous.

Hot takes:
1- I like soggy fries
2- Crinkle-cut is wildly overrated
3- Ketchup tastes like sugary shit and has no place on my food, EVER.

Adequate, mostly.

i havent had 5 guys since living in virginia, so at least 6 years. i always thought it was a relatively good deal considering all you got. seems to be a lot more of them around now too. none in alaska though :(
![]() 02/23/2018 at 14:23 |

I don’t mind the prices because the food is good and because free peanuts. But it is a bit pricey.
![]() 02/23/2018 at 14:25 |

1. Probably because too much road salt.
2. You are confused.
3. Certainly not on fries.

Alaska? Do they have internet there?

My dream in high school was to one day be able to afford Carl’s Jr. every day. This would be way beyond those means.
![]() 02/23/2018 at 14:29 |
|
I would see them as a potential contender. Carl’s Junior has waffle-cuts as well.
And seasoned curlies are always good.
![]() 02/23/2018 at 14:32 |

If you could combine an In-N-Out double double with 5 guys fries that would be bliss. I will eat In-N-Out fries but by no means do I think they are “good” I would give them a 5/10. 5 guys gets a 8/10. A 10/10 would be organic, free range, shade grown, artisan, virgin harvested, cold rolled, roasted potatoes from a local restaurant that we frequent.

actually...i dont have internet at my house

Not a crinkle cut fan but I will definitely agree on them being not soggy. I tell ya though, if you ever get the chance, try Steak N Shake. It’s like fancy fast food. The burgers are amazing. Hell everything there is amazing in my opinion.

five guys fries are only good with the cajun seasoning

I’m just off carbs entirely.
It’s working. I get a motorbike when I hit my goal, which I think I can do around July. I needed some serious bait to keep myself on track.

“Keep your mayonnaise away from my French fries, dammit!”
Wow thanks.
A shoutout would be appreciated next time.

1) So I’m not supposed to grind it up and snort it?
2) I’m perfectly clear-headed (see #1). I have no problems eating crinkle cut fries, they simply are not the be all and end all that they are cracked up to be.
3) Well at least we agree on something.
![]() 02/23/2018 at 15:10 |

Get some frozen custard too, that’s what they’re really known for. They’ve expanded a lot into Illinois in the last decade. There are several within range of your sister’s place.
Be careful with their “butter burgers.” They delicious, but make me take an urgent dump within 20 minutes. I stick with their chicken fingers now.
![]() 02/23/2018 at 15:11 |
|
They are delicious, but the problem with them is all that surface area makes them get cold in approximately 82 seconds.
![]() 02/23/2018 at 15:14 |

Gotta be careful what location you go to with Steak and Shake. Some of them make Waffle House look like Michelin-rated cuisine. The last one I ate at was truly horrible.

An order of such fries must be about $60.

Light-weight.

Go when you don’t have the flu.

I haven’t tried them that way. I pretty much like my fried potatoes with salt and more potatoes.

I’m planning on visiting the Iola Swap Meet in 2019 — my daughter’s college commencement conflicts with this year’s event — and when I do, I’ll be sure to eat at a Culver’s.

Nope don’t want diarrhea
![]() 02/23/2018 at 15:26 |

Well... You’re still famous, aren’t you?
And those Midwesterners like Shop Teacher can keep their ketchup, also.
![]() 02/23/2018 at 15:27 |

Really? Arby’s with the curlies?
I’ll have to check that out.

And Kansas! Yay!

But liking soggy fries? Maybe that’s like an Indiana thing?
Do I remember that you are Chicagoland?
![]() 02/23/2018 at 15:33 |

That’s why you eat them immediately.
![]() 02/23/2018 at 15:34 |

make sure to try the cheese curds and frozen custard
![]() 02/23/2018 at 15:35 |

I would never order something called a butter burger. I don’t want to overly hasten my demise.
I just talked to my sister. (She’s not my actual sister, but my sort of sister...) She’s retired from the Army now and ensconced with her wife in Wheaton. She’s sounding a lot better.
It’s a really weird thing connecting with someone after 35 years. It’s different.
![]() 02/23/2018 at 15:36 |

Do those fries not agree with you? Do they use a certain kind of oil that disagrees with you? I ate a mountain of those fries last night and other than gaining five or six pounds, I experienced no ill effects.
![]() 02/23/2018 at 15:41 |
|
Considering I’ve never lived in Indiana, I doubt it.
Yep, I live less than 10 miles from your sister in Wheaton.
![]() 02/23/2018 at 15:41 |
|
Yes, it is an absolute necessity!
![]() 02/23/2018 at 15:43 |
|
Probably for the best.
Gotcha. I live just a bit east of Wheaton, in Villa Park.
There’s a couple people I really need to do that with, before it becomes 35 years.

No mater what I eat from Five Guys I have like 1/2 an hour before blitzkriegging the shitter.

Crinkle cut
Yeah Right. Crinkle cut is for school lunchrooms only.

Okay Mister Billy Badass, what fries to
you
like?
![]() 02/23/2018 at 18:27 |

Damn, that sucks. The ones I have been to along the gulf coast have been excellent thus far. I think we only have 2 in Mississippi right now. Wish we had one where I live, but driving to the coast is worth it.
![]() 02/23/2018 at 18:29 |

I just looked it up. They are indeed in California.
![]() 02/23/2018 at 18:32 |

The nearest one is in San Jose, about 30 miles away.

Some of them are straight up vile.

I gave up soda 3 or 4 (I think 3) Lents ago, and have only had a craving for it once since. I will indulge in soda-flavored alcohol (Not Your Father’s Mountain Ale, for example), but not actual soda.

Penn Station East Coast Subs.
Fries are fresh-cut when you order, then fried in peanut oil, and available in as big of a portion - roughly - as Five Guys’ offering.
They’re here in Saint Louis, not sure how much farther West they’ve expanded. We’re also one of the farthest-East major areas that Jack in the Box goes.

With the skins? Better already.
![]() 02/25/2018 at 13:16 |
